Purchasing a UTV or side by side can be a great option for many people, but they tend to be a bit bigger than ATVs and their variance in size is more significant as well. Knowing the size of a UTV can be an important factor in deciding which UTV to buy. Can you fit the UTV on your trailer or in your garage ? Will the UTV fit on the trails you like to ride? These questions, and many more, are going to be essential in determining if a UTV, and which UTV, is right for you.
How big is a UTV? Most sport-model UTVs are either going to be around 48 inches wide or 60 inches wide. Utility-model UTVs are usually between 58-64 inches wide. 2-seat UTVs are typically 110-125 inches long, while 4-seat UTVs are typically 135-160 inches long. Youth UTVs average about 48 inches wide and 85 inches long.
Here is the crazy thing about side by sides. They come in more shapes and sizes than you can imagine. Just walk into a dealership with a decent selection and you will find models barely bigger than a standard quad next to 4 seat sport models that look bigger than a Jeep. We’ve given you the rough averages above, but below are some of the dimensions for many of the popular models available.
What Type of UTVs are there?
UTVs can typically be separated into two categories: the traditional utilitarian side by sides; and the newer high-performance models. There are also a larger number of UTVs that are considered cross-overs between high-performance and utilitarian, such that the lines grow ever more blurred.
Side by sides most commonly come with two seats, one for an operator and one for a passenger next to the operator. There are also a large variety with a back row of seats, designed to hold a total of four passengers. You can even find UTVs designed for only one passenger, which I suppose could not be called a side by side.
